My Grade 1 students enjoyed this <a href="https://animoto.com/dashboard" target="_blank">Animoto</a> video which I made with their art work done in the style of Joan Miro.<br />
<br />
This is a great way to share student art with the community.<br />

We regularly have a drawing area (paper, chalk or whiteboard and my class windows), a painting center and a playdoh or sculpting area where we work on different art skills. <div><br></div><div>Anyone walking into my room may think it chaos, but the students are engaged in creating, sharing and collaborating in something which interests them and their confidence is grown in the things of art as they are allowed to engage in art making of their choice. </div><div><br></div><div>A delightful idea was introduced in class when our students started discussing the monsters they saw on a movie. Our playdoh center objective became to make your own monster from playdoh. The most delightful "scary" monsters started appearing on their tables and suddenly everyone was in the monster producing business. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIK58jORP5PQJzqBTtxieu-tXloApxbhvgQKXHzxZzjB0jo-KQ_RBlQRqQlhDK-LEB_lajWzOFH8hu-EBRBWB84d2yPeyq67jk-hWEGk2rKRfMPGkE9zMi2nfnFyv0GN_EADTHnorhc435/s640/blogger-image--1336209875.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIK58jORP5PQJzqBTtxieu-tXloApxbhvgQKXHzxZzjB0jo-KQ_RBlQRqQlhDK-LEB_lajWzOFH8hu-EBRBWB84d2yPeyq67jk-hWEGk2rKRfMPGkE9zMi2nfnFyv0GN_EADTHnorhc435/s640/blogger-image--1336209875.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div>I decided to take it one step further to encourage observational drawing by allowing the students to draw the shapes, follow color designs to recreate their playdoh monsters in 2D on paper. </div><div>Don't limit the ability of 5 year olds. They were asked to bring them to art class for a special activity.<br />
<div>
I explained about exercising the body to get better at running and that in the same way we exercise our eyes to get better at drawing what we see. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzyUkWWp8ZVnIk9KvYLtlU8Nkgk2W5SQiJaABDMbERhMsfLeHCVXIyBEUhrdeWLSLqJReTWCuqPLGx6218vxJk6wuF6xoERxUjgKXuADBg5NtxJqBx5dwpN3_5DwYPPZTjUenxhbt6OupV/s640/blogger-image--461759513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzyUkWWp8ZVnIk9KvYLtlU8Nkgk2W5SQiJaABDMbERhMsfLeHCVXIyBEUhrdeWLSLqJReTWCuqPLGx6218vxJk6wuF6xoERxUjgKXuADBg5NtxJqBx5dwpN3_5DwYPPZTjUenxhbt6OupV/s320/blogger-image--461759513.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
They were given a sheet of paper on which they would have various attempts at drawing the contour line which they observed.<br />
We chanted a rhyme quietly while we worked,<br />
"Eyes, eyes what do you see?<br />
Eyes, eyes, look carefully!"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE2Wdmk8RYknThn00quPXdveHGjGBUpFaN568IJI4wztXjAG0lnD1nnBYDCrZQDju9bksxOtiEGPSBVJnQNcoPtSWGpBdm4Csv9VHvMGnbQJOSo90xiy6WuN9IeIu97BYKvX7btWYp317O/s640/blogger-image--1310166185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE2Wdmk8RYknThn00quPXdveHGjGBUpFaN568IJI4wztXjAG0lnD1nnBYDCrZQDju9bksxOtiEGPSBVJnQNcoPtSWGpBdm4Csv9VHvMGnbQJOSo90xiy6WuN9IeIu97BYKvX7btWYp317O/s320/blogger-image--1310166185.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Most students made very good progress from not being able to draw a teddy to drawing very successfully through observation. I encouraged them to observe and draw something everyday to help "exercise" their eyes to help improve their drawing skills.<br />
<br />
My students love their teddies so this was my theory behind choosing this object for their introduction to observational drawings. They feel comfortable and safe with their "friends".<br />
<br />

Here are a few samples of our completed master pieces. I do believe we will take these even further to see how the paintings can be further manipulated with technology.<br />

<div>
I thought it would be a great idea to share the connections between art and math by allowing students to work with math concepts that help us with the creating process.</div>
<div>
We worked with numbers as inspiration, shapes, symmetry and re-sizing. There were opportunities to work with oil pastels, tempera paints, water colors,marker pens and chalk pastels.</div>
<div>
Elementary students were proud to see their striking artworks on display at the welcome table. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Please leave a comment on how you have used math concepts in the art room.<br />

<div>
I showed my students examples of the work by popular Pop Artists Andy Warhol and David Hockney. We looked at similarities and differences in their work and thought about how we could use their styles to create our own modern art which reflects the country in which we live. </div>
<div>
We discussed color and shape in depth and looked at objects which symbolize the country, city and lifestyles within. It was up to my students to do their planning. Some worked individually on Hockney style pictures and others collaborated in groups to create Warhol or large Hockney type canvases. </div>
<div>

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Grade 5 students have planned and analyzed ways in which emotions and moods can be created in their artwork. </span></div>
<div>
Their final products reflect a good understanding of the use of line and color to communicate meaning to a viewer. Have a look at some of the lines and colors used in these paintings. </div>

Grade 2 students have been busy learning about how shape is used in art. They met Henri Matisse through a DVD called, "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-GcqvHJfPc" target="_blank">Dropping In On Matisse</a>." This is one title in a whole child-friendly series on getting to know the work of various famous artists.</div>
<br />
Our objective is to make art which reflects life at school. We decided to make collages in the style of Matisse.<br />
Grade 2's modeled various activities which students do in school and took turns photographing the postures. Learners had to choose their favorite contour lines after uploading their work to <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/educreations-interactive-whiteboard/id478617061?ls=1&mt=8" target="_blank">Educreations</a> and outlining the figures in the photo.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

They prepared base layer sheets by finger painting various colors onto large sheets of paper.</div>

They cut large sheets of colored paper onto which they drew the outlines of the postures we chose to depict life at school. Students took turns cutting out the figures which were then placed on the prepared backgrounds. More interesting school related shapes were added to the piece to add variety. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Grade 6 students were asked to write a review on the work produced collaboratively by Grade 2 students. They had to evaluate the use of the elements of art and had to make one suggestion for improvement which would be considered by the Grade 2 teams. </div>

They were given key areas to plan and laid out their thoughts and research in Popplet, a mind mapping app which allows the use of text, images and writing.<br />
<div>
My students planned their work and saved their Popplet Plan in Showbie. This is where I have a chance to give them feedback on each process we are involved in, in the Artroom. (In this case, planning) </div>

Aurasma, an augmented reality app offers you exactly what you are looking for. <div>Grade 3 students have been analyzing the work of modernist painter and sculptor, David Hockney after exercising their distance drawing skills. </div><div>Here is a little look at their engagement in the topic. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWLBjs8tZt7gv6bfe7l-cdE41XqSGp2U8-JnhKJnEnzg469fOFu_iS60nId5tLJHqrhPBP-X-e73IqxpiENMd4cJvcTjVhH6XRE4klmy7Tssgi47S-6CmPnb2vqf0QqmrGVHEaJ9RD4ytW/s640/blogger-image--632782139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWLBjs8tZt7gv6bfe7l-cdE41XqSGp2U8-JnhKJnEnzg469fOFu_iS60nId5tLJHqrhPBP-X-e73IqxpiENMd4cJvcTjVhH6XRE4klmy7Tssgi47S-6CmPnb2vqf0QqmrGVHEaJ9RD4ytW/s640/blogger-image--632782139.jpg"></a></div>Download the Aurasma app and after logging in, go to the tool bar at the bottom of the screen, find the search tool (magnifying glass). <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br>
I pretended not to find the hidden tiger and ended up looking all around at all the lines he used to make the trees and jungle plants until I accidentally stumbled upon the scary tiger. It caught me by surprise, of course, much to the students' delight.<br>
Further more, taking into account all the different learning styles and SMART Intelligences, we moved around like trees in the wind so that we could feel how the lines were bending and crept down low like the tiger until we pounced on our class buddies. It was delightful seeing their enjoyment of being out of their chairs and feeling the movement.<br>
This was my cue to bring out the paper and pastels, which we started with, and allowed the little artists to paint the most interesting lines to create trees and plants, as our class GOAL for the day was: "To use INTERESTING lines in our pictures."<br>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjqRnMrfv96BRPDPFkx_w1OhMRveUZWNfmxKrv8yGIiSuRBHxoqJJA9eR4nt9KW-W3iwl_XEElqDuTD3O4Td7Ec3V0uYYycCibkeu0zDES-naunY8PPP-Vq06fS4cheOvgmgIv0-JsE6qG/s640/blogger-image-1801993099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjqRnMrfv96BRPDPFkx_w1OhMRveUZWNfmxKrv8yGIiSuRBHxoqJJA9eR4nt9KW-W3iwl_XEElqDuTD3O4Td7Ec3V0uYYycCibkeu0zDES-naunY8PPP-Vq06fS4cheOvgmgIv0-JsE6qG/s640/blogger-image-1801993099.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
As they were working, I quietly placed ready made paint on their work stations and watched how they systematically started adding leaves to their pastel lines with the paint. As usual, they got a bit carried away trying to paint big blobs so I started singing a song'<br>
"Lines, lines, lines,<br>
lines, lines, lnes,<br>
we're painting with interesting lines,"<br>
and with the lovely age that they are, they soon joined in and started painting the most beautiful INTERESTING lines and their artwork developed into individual little master pieces.<br>
I'm so excited to see how it will all turn out after we add the tiger next week. Perhaps I'll let them add an animal of their choice. Let's wait and see.<br>
Well done, little artists!<br>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The best part about using Artsonia is that as an art teacher I am able to view the progress in student work over a number of years. Students can reflect on their understanding of their projects by writing <a href="http://www.artsonia.com/schools/archive.asp?id=118185&type=statements" target="_blank">artist statements </a>about their work and visitors may <a href="http://www.artsonia.com/schools/archive.asp?id=118185&type=comments" target="_blank">leave comments</a> on individual art works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNbojPBGMnvRhFm88lXkwhhlhFqqsaUF8F7vEDTs-vAgzImCMsd4hA6oZ3y_fgHqBz500_n1yFftbGPv7oDRkDAvU9gQrfPw9rKgWCHvixNjpnNVsK-oXQIH3-Z6RmiEDI-zDoFQeLV-Bn/s1600/portfolio.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNbojPBGMnvRhFm88lXkwhhlhFqqsaUF8F7vEDTs-vAgzImCMsd4hA6oZ3y_fgHqBz500_n1yFftbGPv7oDRkDAvU9gQrfPw9rKgWCHvixNjpnNVsK-oXQIH3-Z6RmiEDI-zDoFQeLV-Bn/s1600/portfolio.JPG" height="320" width="278" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are many features for teachers to use including; giving feedback on student work which students can see when viewing their work, creating <a href="http://www.artsonia.com/schools/videos.asp?id=118185" target="_blank">animoto clips</a> of student work and sending class news letters to parents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My students are always keen to earn their online awards and aim to get into the "Hall Of Fame".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBAmtLzEMwA_a9W3KaYFC5yzmRhGwNVX1iGhRc1T2Nc1qEdvLXMTGXU_N70p-Fq6WKy-VM0UArDuE6YIRABNfaWHuVpEe8pOtXblWm_vFIhLM_Zc3YBp98-M1iejuO9JrNdIFj6i46VSMy/s1600/artsonia2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBAmtLzEMwA_a9W3KaYFC5yzmRhGwNVX1iGhRc1T2Nc1qEdvLXMTGXU_N70p-Fq6WKy-VM0UArDuE6YIRABNfaWHuVpEe8pOtXblWm_vFIhLM_Zc3YBp98-M1iejuO9JrNdIFj6i46VSMy/s1600/artsonia2.JPG" height="235" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall, Artsonia allows for a very positive experience towards art for students and teachers.</div>
